How to Hire Lawyers

Hiring an attorney can be an intimidating ordeal. Just relax and treat it like buying a car or choosing a doctor. You need to either get a really strong referral from someone you trust, or you need to talk to several lawyers who specialize in the area you need help in and ask the right questions. Ask the attorneys you screen to provide you references (and CHECK THEM!). Ask the lawyer how many similar matters she has handled. Find out how many people work at the firm because if the lawyer doesn't have legal assistants or younger lawyers who can work on the mundane aspects of your matter, you will be charged more. Ask them to reduce their hourly rate. Many lawyers will do so, and that can save you money. Tell them that you are interviewing other attorneys, and ask them what they are willing to do to win your business. Ask them to show you examples of other cases they have won or handled successfully. If you are hiring a lawyer to represent you in defense of a criminal matter, ask them what classes they have taken in the relevant aspects of law enforcement. For instance, any DUI lawyer you hire should be certified in how to administer a breathalyzer test. Likewise, a speeding ticket lawyer should be certified in how to operate a radar gun. If you already know the judge you will be in front of, ask the lawyers you talk to if they know the judge and what kind of relationship they have with the judge. If the lawyer claims to be friends, ask him pointed questions like, what's the judge's spouse's name? How many kids does the judge have? What political party does the judge affililate with? Ask for examples of the judge's rulings in cases involving the lawyer. The lawyer's relationship with your judge can be very important - in civil and criminal court cases.
